What an invoice in the United Kingdom shows.

  • A unique number that follows on from the last
  • The time of supply, and the date it is issued if different
  • Your name, address and VAT registration number
  • Your customer’s name and address
  • A description of each item, its quantity, its price before VAT and its VAT rate
  • The total before VAT, any discount, and the total VAT
  • Under the domestic reverse charge, that it applies and the VAT your customer accounts for

For building and renovation.

  • Under VAT Notice 708, a building contract paid in stages has a tax point for each stage: the date you invoice it or are paid for it, whichever comes first.
  • The tax point for a retention is when you invoice it or receive it, whichever comes first. A retention takes the VAT rate of the payments before it.
  • A contractor works out CIS on the payment less its VAT and what you paid for materials, plant hired from someone else and fuel other than for travel (HMRC CIS 340).

Sent from the office, paid online.

Invoices go out by email in your business’s name with the PDF. They are paid by card or bank transfer, and overdue ones are chased.
