Relevant Contracts Tax calculator

The RCT on a payment, worked out to the cent.

A principal contractor deducts RCT from the whole of each payment to you under a relevant contract, at the rate Revenue sets. Nothing is left out for materials.

What the calculator works out

It takes one amount, the payment before any deduction, and one of Revenue’s three rates: 0%, 20% or 35%. It gives two figures: the RCT deducted, and what you are paid.

The deduction is the payment times the rate, rounded to the cent. The office works out its own RCT figures the same way, so on the same amount at the same rate its figure is the one here.

The rule, as Revenue states it

RCT applies when a principal contractor pays a subcontractor under a relevant contract for construction, forestry or meat processing. The principal notifies Revenue of the contract, then of each payment before making it, all in ROS. Revenue answers each notified payment with a deduction authorisation stating the rate and the tax to deduct.

Your rate follows your tax compliance record. When tax is deducted, the principal gives you a copy of the authorisation, or its details.

  • 0%: an up-to-date tax compliance record.
  • 20%: a substantially up-to-date record.
  • 35%: a poor record, or not registered with Revenue.

A worked example

A principal contractor is paying you €6,410.30 under a relevant contract.

  • At 20%: €1,282.06 is deducted and you are paid €5,128.24.
  • At 35%: the exact figure is €2,243.605. The calculator rounds it to €2,243.61 and shows €4,166.69 paid.
  • At 0%: nothing is deducted and you are paid the whole €6,410.30.

The same rule in the office

When your Deduction rate is above 0%, a reverse-charged invoice to a customer whose type is Principal contractor shows what to Expect: the cash, and the RCT credit. That credit is this calculator’s figure on the whole invoice, at your rate.

When the balance left on that invoice is within €1 of the credit, Record a payment offers it. One press fills it in as Tax withheld at source, at the same rate, ready for Record it.

On the bigger plans, you type Revenue's deduction when you pay a subcontractor’s bill. The office’s own figure beside it is this calculator’s, at that subcontractor’s rate, with any difference shown.

Questions, answered.

Is RCT worked out before or after VAT?
Before VAT, on construction work. There the VAT reverse charge applies: a subcontractor registered for VAT charges none to the principal, who accounts for it instead. The principal notifies Revenue of the payment without VAT.
Can my RCT rate change?
Yes. Revenue reviews rates in rolling reviews, and a changed rate arrives as a notice of determination in your ROS inbox. Once a compliance issue is put right, you can self-review your rate in ROS and get a new determination.
Do I get back the RCT a principal deducts?
Yes. Revenue credits your tax record with it. Once a return is filed and its tax falls due, the credit is offset against that tax: VAT, your PAYE as an employer, income tax or corporation tax.
Is RCT deducted on a job for a homeowner?
No. A private householder is not a principal to whom RCT applies, so nothing comes off what a householder pays you. A builder who takes you on for part of that householder’s job is a principal, and operates RCT on its payments to you.
Does the office check my RCT rate with Revenue?
No. It does not connect to ROS. You type the rate Revenue notified to you as your Deduction rate, in Settings under Tax. It stays as typed until you change it.
