What an invoice in the United Kingdom shows.

  • A unique number that follows on from the last
  • The time of supply, and the date it is issued if different
  • Your name, address and VAT registration number
  • Your customer’s name and address
  • A description of each item, its quantity, its price before VAT and its VAT rate
  • The total before VAT, any discount, and the total VAT
  • Under the domestic reverse charge, that it applies and the VAT your customer accounts for

For flooring.

  • HMRC’s domestic reverse charge reaches only work reported under CIS, so carpet fitting alone for a builder is outside it.
  • On a 5% conversion, or a 5% renovation of a home empty for two years, carpet and underlay are 20%, and so is fitting them.
