What an invoice in the United Kingdom shows.

  • A unique number that follows on from the last
  • The time of supply, and the date it is issued if different
  • Your name, address and VAT registration number
  • Your customer’s name and address
  • A description of each item, its quantity, its price before VAT and its VAT rate
  • The total before VAT, any discount, and the total VAT
  • Under the domestic reverse charge, that it applies and the VAT your customer accounts for

For air conditioning and heat pumps.

  • Where it is unclear whether a unit is an air source heat pump, HMRC decides on the facts of each case (VAT Notice 708/6).
  • Installing a whole air conditioning or heating system for a contractor is CIS work. On their own, servicing, repairs, replacing parts and extending a system are not (HMRC CISR14090).
