Burglar alarm installs are RCT work.

A burglar alarm installed, altered or repaired in a building for a principal contractor is RCT work. A contract that only maintains one is not, and the office bills the alarm service with ordinary VAT and no RCT.

Questions, answered.

Does it keep my PSA licence for intruder alarm and CCTV work?
No. The office keeps no PSA record, and no kind of work it sets up for alarms asks for a registration.
What VAT rate does it put on alarm work?
Supplying and fitting, or repairing and maintaining, an alarm in a building is at 13.5%, subject to the two-thirds rule. From a VAT-registered firm, alarm work goes out at that rate, weighed by the rule. Monitoring is at 23%. On an invoice that is not reverse-charged, a monitoring line can be marked Separate, standard rate.
Can it bill monitoring every month?
No. There is no recurring invoice. A monitoring fee can be billed on its own from New invoice on Money, with no job behind it.
